Malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) or the lining around the heart (the pericardium). It is also known as Asbestos Cancer.
Mesothelioma is quite a rare cancer but it is becoming more common. About 1,800 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year in the UK. It is much more common in men - 85 out of every 100 cases diagnosed are in men. Pleural mesothelioma is more common than peritoneal mesothelioma.
